SHORT BIO:

Chrys Fey is a disabled, tattooed author of books featuring heroines of steel. Her Disaster Crimes series is a unique blend of romance, disasters, and crimes, influenced by her own experiences with natural disasters. The conclusion of her series inspired her to create TheFightingChance.org, a resource for domestic violence survivors. On her blog, WritewithFey.com, she supports, empowers, and teaches fellow writers.

Fey got the idea for her first book when she was twelve and discovered a rusted screw with a crooked tip buried in grass. That screw was a key to an unknown world with an extraordinary character born in heaven.

She is a fur baby mom of four rescued cats. For fun, she photographs antiques, makes playlists, and creates flip cup paintings of Avrianna’s nebula. She loves Halloween, autumn, and gargoyles.

EXPERIENCE:

JUDGE FOR RPLA:

In 2022, Chrys Fey was a judge for the Florida Writers Association’s annual Royal Palm Literary Awards. When she looked into the contest, she was pleased to see their diversity statement, the fact that they implement diversity training for all judges, have an LGBTQ+ category for fiction and non-fiction, and have separate categories for young writers so they can enter and see their dreams realized, too. This was a competition she can support and was honored to be a judge for.

THEFIGHTINGCHANCE.ORG:

The Fighting Chance is a fictional self-defense studio run by Beth Kennedy/Goldwyn in the Disaster Crimes series by Chrys Fey. In the books, it is a place where people (men, women, young and old) went to learn confidence, strength, and how to defend themselves.

“She also had The Fighting Chance—a place she went to in the real world and a place that dwelled inside her.” – from A Fighting Chance (Disaster Crimes 6)

In the book A Fighting Chance, Amanda, a sexual assault survivor and assistant self-defense instructor, mentions how she came across the website for Beth’s studio and how it had changed her life. That’s how Chrys Fey got the idea to create a website fashioned after the fictional studio. Her goal was to make it a resource for people, especially women, who want to learn more about self-defense, what to do if you’re experiencing domestic violence (or any time of abuse), and how to be an advocate.

You will find resources, videos, music, classes, and much more.

And just like in the books, all first-time students have the opportunity to sign their name on the Wall of Signatures, as a right of passage and the beginning of their journey, so go over to the Wall of Signatures page and add your first name/nickname/initials/pseudonym/alias. You can comment anonymously.

PAST PARTNERSHIP:

From 2016 to 2017, Chrys Fey was the newsletter administrator for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group. She secured publishing and writing experts for the monthly newsletter to contribute articles, including Jane Friedman, Sandra Beckwith (BuildBookBuzz), Joanna Penn, Susan Kaye Quinn, Brenda Drake (creator of #PitchWars, #PitchMadness, and #PitMad), Hannah Haney (Writer’s Digest contributor), Angela Ackerman, Elizabeth S. Craig, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, Rayne Hall (Writer’s Craft series), Therese Walsh (Writer Unboxed), Elizabeth Sims (Writer’s Digest contributing editor), and more.

During this time, the IWSG was listed on Writer’s Digest’s 19th Annual 101 Best Websites for Writers (listed at #64), and the newsletter received a favorable mention because it “boasted industry pros,” including Jessica Strawser, the editorial director of the Writer’s Digest magazine, who provided an article titled “Patricia Cornwell’s Advice on Insecurity.”

While Chrys Fey was an administrator for the IWSG, she pitched the idea for monthly optional questions twice after seeing interest in the blog hop waning. Monthly optional questions for the blog hop are still in use today.

Chrys had also participated in a live YouTube interview for the IWSG with Evan Carmichael, author of Your One Word.

As a blog hop member, Chrys advocated for diversity. After she was asked to be a judge for their 2021 romance anthology, she noticed all the judges were white and how that reflected most panels since 2016. This prompted her to step down as a judge and request an equally qualified BIPOC author or two to take her place.

Chrys also created and ran the Insecure Writer’s Support Group Book Club on Goodreads from April 2017 to July 2021. She created the book club for writers to read/learn about the craft of writing. The book club had 457 members at the time the book club was taken in a new direction and she passed on the torch to one of her long-time moderators.
